Organic IDEA

Why Organic IDEA?

Organic farming is going through an unprecedented crisis: an economic crisis on the one hand, with a sharp drop in demand and prices, and a political crisis on the other, with a reduction in subsidies for organic farmers and the abolition of maintenance subsidies in France, for example, compounded by the climate crisis with unprecedented local events.

There is therefore an urgent need to promote an agroecological agricultural model based on organic farming and to demonstrate its environmental, social and economic performance. Scientific scenarios for the transition to organic farming on a European scale exist: CLINorg and TYFA. But once the prospects have been established, the question is how to go about it. That is why this project will track down local or regional innovations, from field to plate, to make them visible and spread them across Europe. It also aims to show that this model of organic agroecology is robust in the face of a multitude of crises and changes of different kinds.

This study will therefore provide essential information, which is currently scarce at European level, to prove that organic agroecology is a credible and desirable alternative for the agricultural model of tomorrow. Finally, the impacts of agricultural models are often poorly studied and a multitude of hidden impacts (water pollution, damage to public health, etc.) leading to hidden costs/hidden benefits are frequently underestimated. The project aims to analyse organic agroecology using multiple criteria, first at the farm level and then on a more systemic level, considering the benefits it can have for society.

Which method should be used for the multi-criteria assessment of agroecology in Europe?

The multi-criteria assessment project for organic agroecology aims to build a database of representative farms in France and Europe that use this model. The first phase of the project involved selecting the IDEA4 multi-criteria assessment method, which has been developed over the past 20 years by INRAE in France.

Organic IDEA: Promising initial results for a robust and healthy model of large agroecological farms

We are pleased to share the initial findings of the Organic IDEA project, a multi-criteria assessment conducted by EUfarms on 13 European organic farms committed to an integrated and efficient agroecology model.

Despite the limited size of this sample, the results are very encouraging: these farms are highly resilient to climatic and economic uncertainties, with superior performance in agroecological terms, particularly in terms of soil health, biodiversity, water quality and animal welfare.

Beyond that, these farms have a concrete impact on reducing risks to human health and ecosystems, thanks to their exemplary control of inputs and sustainable practices.

On a socio-territorial level, these farms embody a genuine dynamic of social cohesion, quality of work and territorial anchoring, demonstrating a viable, responsible and attractive agricultural model.

These results show that organic agroecology can offer a credible and effective framework, based on solid, scientifically validated foundations.

We would like to express our sincere thanks to our partner farms for their commitment, which has enabled us to lay concrete foundations for a sustainable agricultural transition backed by data.

We would also like to thank our scientific partners and sponsors.
